Mind-Controlled Smart Homes: The Future of Living

Bogazici University

Biomedical Engineering

About this course:

This course explores the emerging realm of mind-controlled smart homes,
where everyday devices—such as lighting, temperature controls, and security systems—can be operated
using brainwave detection and processing. We will delve into the technology behind brain-computer
interfaces (BCIs), discussing their practical applications, ethical considerations, and potential
for transforming modern living spaces into more intuitive, accessible environments. Through a blend
of theoretical discussions and interactive demonstrations, students will gain a holistic
understanding of how neurotechnology is shaping the future of home automation.

Learning outcomes:
  • Explain key concepts of brain-computer interfaces and how they enable mind-controlled devices.
  • Assess real-world applications of BCIs in managing home automation systems.
  • Identify security and privacy implications associated with neurotechnology-based interfaces.
  • Develop a basic prototype or conceptual framework for a mind-controlled smart home system.
  • Evaluate ethical issues surrounding neurotechnological advancements in daily life.
Prerequisites for participation:

Open to students, researchers, and professionals interested in neurotechnology, human-computer
interaction, or advanced smart home solutions. Basic familiarity with programming and AI concepts
is recommended but not mandatory.
